Spatial damping identification for enhanced dissipation layout design

DIGEP B Room – Politecnico di Torino, Corso Duca degli Abruzzi, 24

Domenico Lisitano - PhD in Management, Production and Design

Dissipation phenomena are always present in real systems. Usually dissipations and losses are not voluntary introduced during the products design phase, but they come up when the physical product is tested. In mechanical systems dynamics, dissipations are classified as “damping” effects.

While inertial and elastic properties are well understood, identified and several tools are available for the design phase, identification of damping is still a grey area in research.

The research presented in the seminar aims to clarify spatial damping identification in mechanical systems and how to enhance its distribution to optimise product performance without invasive design changes. In particular identification, localisation and quantification of the dissipation sources, e.g. the real damping in a structure, from only experimental results will be discussed, together with strategies to change the actual dissipation layout in the system.

Spatial damping identification is performed through the developed Stabilised Layer Method (STL), using only standard parameters extracted by the well-established experimental modal analysis.
The dissipation layout in linear and also strongly nonlinear system can be modified using specific control strategies in order to achieve product requirements, adding only sensors and actuators on the original design.
