Supersymmetry - Reflections on the Future of a Symmetry from the Future

Sala Consiglio di Facoltà - Politecnico di Torino

Professor Sergio Ferrara is winner of the 2019 Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics with Professor Daniel Z. Freedman and and Professor Peter van Nieuwenhuizen, for the discovery of supergravity in which quantum variables are included, for the first time, in the description of spacetime.

This theory generalizes Einstein's general relativity by incorporating the idea of a "supersymmetry” between elementary particles. In the last forty years it has had important implications for physics beyond the Standard Model, for superstring theory, for cosmology and mathematics.
